Technical FAQ

Why use an external driver instead of an integrated ECM motor?

An external driver separates the motor from its control electronics, providing greater flexibility in motor and driver matching, control customization, thermal management and service access. This modular architecture allows HVAC manufacturers to adapt motor performance and control configurations to specific equipment requirements.

Can one external driver support different ECM motors?

Yes, a compatible external driver platform can be configured for different ECM motors, provided their voltage, power, current, electrical characteristics and control requirements fall within the driver's supported operating range.

Motor parameters and firmware settings may need adjustment. Each motor and driver combination must be evaluated and validated before use.

Does TACICON support sensorless ECM motor control?

Yes. TACICON offers sensorless motor driver solutions that operate without Hall-effect rotor position sensors.

Sensorless control can reduce sensor wiring and simplify motor integration. Availability depends on the selected driver board, motor design and operating requirements.

What HVAC control signals can the external driver support?

Depending on the driver model and configuration, TACICON supports control options such as 0–10V, PWM, multi-speed inputs and RS485 communication.

Control interfaces, communication protocols and operating logic can also be evaluated for OEM customization. Compatibility with existing HVAC controllers or thermostats must be confirmed for each application.

Can TACICON customize both the ECM motor and driver board?

Yes. TACICON provides OEM/ODM customization for ECM motors and external driver boards.

Motor customization can include power, speed, torque, shaft dimensions and mounting configurations. Driver customization can include electrical specifications, PCB hardware, control interfaces, firmware and motor protection functions.

We can also support impeller and blower matching to meet HVAC airflow and installation requirements.

What information is required for motor and driver matching?

To evaluate a suitable ECM motor and external driver configuration, we recommend providing the following information:

  • Application: HVAC equipment type and operating requirements
  • Airflow Performance: Required airflow (CFM or m³/h) and external static pressure (ESP)
  • Motor Specifications: Power, voltage, speed, torque and operating conditions
  • Control Requirements: Speed-control signals, communication interfaces and control logic
  • Mechanical Requirements: Motor dimensions, shaft, mounting and blower configuration

If you have an existing motor or blower assembly, you can also share its nameplate, model number, specifications or technical drawings for evaluation.
